See the Greatest Naval Battle of the Civil War.

The Battle of Mobile Bay is considered the Greatest Naval Battle of the Civil War and is perhaps the most romanticized naval battle in history.

On August 5th, 1864 Admiral David Farragut led the attack on Mobile Bay with his fleet of 14 ships and 4 iron clads. Farragut's objective was to defeat the forces at Fort Morgan and Fort Gaines closing the Confederate supply line by way of Mobile. During this battle, Admiral Farragut uttered his most famous phrase, "DAMN THE TORPEDOES, FULL SPEED AHEAD!".

The defense of Mobile Bay was lead by Admiral Franklin Buchanan and consisted of the CSS Tennessee, a Confederate iron clad, and three gun boats, the CSS Gaines, Morgan and Selma. Once Farragut entered into Mobile Bay, Buchanan immediately engaged the Union fleet. The gunboats were destroyed shortly after the start of this battle, but the CSS Tennessee, commanded by Buchanan fought on, taking on Farragut's entire fleet single handed.

This battle demonstrates the Heroism and Valor of those who fought.
